Words escape me these days. I am finding myself overwhelmed with the day to day responsibilities of life. My own health is reflecting the strain. I am reminding myself that life is one day at a time. Chores need completed but they can almost always wait for another day. Who else is feeling overwhelmed taking care of their spouse? We are on a roller-coaster ride. Life is moving fast and at times seems out of control. What do you do when your spouse needs surgery or a procedure that will help but they are afraid to go through with it? It is their choice but as the spouse, you are also affected but the continued deterioration of physical and/or mental condition. I believe it is very important to encourage your spouse to maintain their independence or as much of it as possible for as long as possible. At what point is it your decision? I do not like it when I am feeling alone in our marriage and partnership, making all our decisions. It frustrates me when I slip back into the old comfortable role of wife and get slapped by the reality of my husband's continuing mental deterioration. Most of the time he seems ok, but when pushed, the lack of understanding or thought processing resurfaces. At this point I kick myself for allowing myself to forget where we are in life, to think we are in our normal old life. The reality is that we are in our ever changing, new normal life. It is almost like being a parent to your life partner. I want my partner back, not this parenting role. These are tough, exhausting questions and situations to face alone. I am so thankful I do not have to face life alone. I have been blessed with three wonderful daughters who are also my best friends. These girls- women, are my God sightings. They bless me every single day.
